Stopping Your Cat From Biting You: It's Easy!

5 stars of 5, 673 votes

Biting is one of those innate things that cats like to do, especially as kittens. Instinctively, cats want to play fight with things, which hones their hunting skills for later in life. Of course, house cats don't have to hunt anything other than the food bowl, but the instinct is still there. With a new cat, it's important to never let it use your hands as toys to play fight with. This would teach them that it's okay to bite and claw at your hands, which will stick with them and be very hard to discourage. Next time your cat tries to bite you, firmly say, "NO" and don't interact with it. If you just say "no" and keep letting it bite you or keep playing with it, it won't understand what you mean. If...

Veterinary costs have skyrocketed in the past ten years thanks in part to new advances in technology and veterinary pharmaceuticals.  In these difficult economic times, money spent on your pet’s health may become a real burden on your family budget.  If you think about it for a moment, you may be able to reduce veterinary costs if you shop for them like you would any other service. Did you know you can probably reduce the cost of veterinary inoculations by nearly 50%? Shots are probably the most common vet expense that you have.  In the past, it was not unusual for vets to have a “discount day” where shots were administered by technicians usually one day a week, usually in the evening or...

Several months ago I adopted Hank, a five-year old mutt, from the local Humane Society. I had every hope that he would be a companion and playmate for Banjo, my Australian Shepherd. Unfortunately, things didn't turn out the way I expected. All in all, it was a very bad day for me, for the local veterinarian, for the people at the animal shelter who had come to love quiet, mild-mannered Hank, and, of course, for Hank himself. The first inkling I had that something was very wrong with Hank came while walking him around the exercise yard at the shelter. Hank stopped to piddle so often that I remarked on it, but the shelter volunteer said it was common with animals that are locked in their pens for so...

I have a Border Terrier at home and boy; he used to be a real tough customer. I named him Ruru. Now, Ruru used to go all kooky especially when he sees little animals moving about. It totally bothers me whenever I see him go after them poor creatures like a demented psychopath. And if that wasn't bad enough, he doesn't like to be trained as he tends to become bored fast. Well…how did I solve this problem then? Listen, Border terrier training can be fun and simple if you use a clicker. Really, by following specific clicker techniques, I found that teaching Ruru basic dog obedience commands, housebreaking training and even teaching him cool dog tricks was not that hard after all. See, I learned a lot...

Youth shelters are small but comfortable locations in which kids and teenagers alike can enjoy the freedom of being themselves and having a place to go to get away from it all. Many manufacturers of quality youth shelters tend to incorporate a mix of steel framing and mesh to offer the benefits of a roof overhead and a solid structure with nature connectivity, always giving your kids a place to go to come in out of the rain or heat, while never separating them too far from the beauty of nature. Dogs have been part of the lives of men and women since 10,000BC, probably domesticated from wolves, jackals or some other distant relative; however, scientifically there is no doubt they all have a common canine ancestor. Some have made it their life's ambition to breed and raise wonderful, beautiful dogs. In 1884 in Great Britain, the Kennel Club was established evolving from a group of dog loving enthusiasts. Once this group got together, standards began to be established for various breeds. In the American Kennel Club (AKC) the breeds are categorized into eight groups. In Greyhound racing the dogs are bred, weaned and trained with great care in order to create winning dogs. Unfortunately they are also subject to the "win, place, show, or go" rule. This is where Greyhound rescue and adoption agencies come into the picture. All Greyhound dogs run for the joy of it but the fate of a dog bred for Greyhound racing is based upon coming in first. Two major problems are at the root of the Greyhound dog crisis;over breeding and the inability to take life long responsibility for the dog. In 1980 The American Greyhound Council was formed and promoted adoption. By 1994 for the first time more Greyhounds were adopted through Greyhound adoption and Greyhound rescue agencies...

Easter Dog Parade

In Little Rock, Arkansas, a volunteer group called 'Angels' Care Animal Rescue' is hosting their third 'Dog-Gone Easter Egg Hunt.' Dogs and their owners are invited to come and sniff and find 2000 treat-filled Easter Eggs. So what could the problem be with a harmless Easter Egg Hunt? 1. If the dogs bite into the plastic eggs they may swallow it and the plastic can be poisonous to their systems, or at the very least, it could cause minor cuts in their mouths. 2. All dog owners know or rather should know that if the eggs contain chocolate, it could be lethal to their pooches. 3. If owners decide to use boiled eggs, it spoils soon, and if the eggs are found several days later, it could cause stomach...

Many first time dog owners can be overwhelmed by all the things they hadn't really considered before obtaining their dog. People sometimes try to address only the dog's physical needs. That's natural as those needs can be easily communicated by your dog. However, much of the "problem behavior" in dogs stems from their emotional needs not being met. Believe it or not, your dog is capable of emotions nearly on par with you. When you encounter problem behavior with your new dog, consideration of several things is necessary to discover the cause and prevent it from continuing. Punishing a dog without knowing why the behavior occurred simply invites a repeat performance. See the event through your dog's...

If you love dolphins, there are plenty of resorts and facilities that allow you to get up close to these amazing animals. Here’s what to expect on your swim. Expect to get more when you pay more. Group experiences cost much less than individual experiences, but you’ll get less time with the dolphins in a group and may not get time to interact individually with the dolphins at all. Expect to wear a life jacket. Those dolphins are strong, the tank is deep, and you could be treading water for a long time. Even if you’re a strong swimmer, you’ll usually be required to wear a life jacket. Expect some physical activity. Most dolphin swimming experiences require some physical coordination and...

No one enjoys being bitten by these little critters, especially since we know the diseases associated with them. If we have animals in our yards it is inevitable that we will have ticks and fleas too since they come from far and wide in search of warm blood. When you have long grass or thick brush in your garden it makes it that much easier for the ticks to hang around comfortably waiting for anyone with warm blood to brush past. When this happens the ticks attach themselves and start feeding immediately. One of the first things one can do is keep grass short, ticks tend to sit on the tips of grass blades waiting to attach themselves to anything that brushes past. Also keep tree limbs cut high and...

Those warm, chocolate brown eyes, those big old floppy ears, the lush coat of golden fur...it's enough to send almost anyone to empty their wallets out for one of these little bundles of fluff. However, one should always remember that a golden retriever puppy doesn't stay little forever, and sooner or later, that little puffball that you carry around in your arms is going to grow into a fully matured dog that is capable of knocking you down when it jumps on you. His or her fur, especially during the shedding period, is enough to make any vacuum cleaner go screaming for the hills. However, all their flaws are...

Should You Get a Second Cat?

Most people believe that cats are independent, aloof and solitary creatures. Nothing could be further from the truth. While many cats do live that way, it's not because they choose it. It's because it was forced on them. And once habituated to that lifestyle, they are less likely to accept a companion, thus "proving" to everyone that they are independent, aloof and solitary. In reality, cats are very social and crave companionship. It's why they are wonderful pets. People who need someone to love them unconditionally will find it in a cat. Dogs fulfill this need also, but in different ways. Dogs will openly adore a person, in ways that are more obvious, while cats appear to be more reserved. Cats...

Dogs Need Exercise!

I had a lab puppy staying with me recently who is becoming a dog right before my very eyes. He is growing huge fast! He looks like a dog but still acts very much like a giant puppy! Like most labs I've met, he's a lovable and fun dude to have around most of the time. The last weekend I had him over however, I notice he was more unruly and frustrated as he tried to engage the other dogs in play. He was annoying them because he was out of control. He had not been getting enough exercise to help him burn off all his playful, puppy energy. He couldn't help himself as he tried to engage the other dogs and me to play, play, play! He was just doing what comes naturally to him. He was just trying to burn up...

Bringing home a new puppy is a big step -- no, make that a huge step. Your puppy is coming home for the first time! The Car Ride Home Hopefully you are going to be bringing home a new puppy from a rescue, shelter or breeder that is driving distance. Remember that usually the puppy is not fed in the morning on the day she is going to her new home. This is to make her first car-ride less accident-prone. I would still recommend that you take a blanket, paper towels, and cleaning solution as accidents do happen! When bringing home a new puppy in the car, she may get car-sick and vomit -- it's her very first car ride (of thousands to come)! It's a good idea to have at least two people to go pick up the...

There are a good number of sites offering dog kennels. They provide a huge diversity that makes the selection rather tough. The main varieties of kennels are the classic outdoor kennel, the indoor and the portable kennel but there are many more. They all come in different sizes, shapes and materials. We can provide our dog with a lot. We can offer them the utmost comfort, security and more. Just like humans dogs are also land living species. As such they are always fond of having a habitat of their own. Kennels are available in many varieties...

So I was driving home from my parents’ house, out of state, when I came across a stray dog at one of the rest areas I often frequent on my trips.  Of course my little girl just had to take the helpless puppy home, and in the end I broke down and agreed to let her come home with us.  Now we just had to break the news to my wife, as she wasn’t with us this time.  She was thrilled and loved the little puppy but put her foot down on letting it stay in the house, concerned what it would do to her beloved cats.  To keep the peace in the family I went online and began my search for dog kennel plans. As I reviewed various plans I quickly realized that this was more than throwing together a few...

As dog owners, we want to give the best to our pets. We always see to it that they are well-fed, well-groomed, happy, and comfortable. Many of us want to provide a dog house for our canine best friend, and those who have the right set of skills make wonderful new homes for them built through love, hard work, and determination. Now the challenge is that not all of us are gifted with such skills, and many do not even know the proper way to build dog houses, and for these reasons, we often buy ready-to-occupy homes for our pets. There is nothing wrong with it except that we can save a significant amount of money if we do it ourselves. How? The answer to that question may not necessarily be as difficult...

Our daughter has been nagging us or some months now about having a dog as a pet. She likes animals, and anyway, lots of her school friends have pet dogs so why shouldn't she have one? As a parent, you probably know this is the question which finally seals the deal in the kids eyes. From that point, you have to go and get yourself a dog as a pet. Well, we eventually gave in to this pester power,as you do. The one condition my wife gave us was that the animal had to be housed outside. My wife rightly argued that she was unwilling to risk having damage to furniture and carpets by an as yet untrained dog. However, that might change in the future once the animal is house trained. But for now, he lives...

The most important things that an owner of a mastiff should do are brush his teeth daily. Just like ourselves we brush our teeth daily and clean our tongue daily. When the teeth are not cleaned on regular basis, plaque can build up which causes the gum to recede. This can make eating painful and result in future teeth loss (not to mention "doggy breath") There are plenty of health problems related to dirty teeth.
